The family is the central unit of society. Indeed, we consider it the domestic Church. It is founded in the Fifth Commandment of the Decalogue. When children do not learn to respect their parents, they lack the foundation virtue of respect and, consequently, they do not respect any other authority. When the family becomes the setting for evil and ungodly acts, this eventually will poison our very society. St Teresa of Calcutta, better known as Mother Teresa, cautioned that: “If we accept that a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell other people not to
kill one another.” The root cause of our social problems is the breakdown of family values.
